Contained in your letter of 23rd ultimo. I have the honor to inform you
that I have obtained, from the Metropolitan Police, twenty men for service in Hongkong.
Through the courtesy of Colonel Henderson I have been permitted to examine the defaulters' Sheets
of seventy-five volunteers and I have selected none but men who have borne good characters for at least three years.
The recruits have this evening been examined, and approved
of by the Metropolitan Police. Tomorrow Surgeon and at noon they will sign the agreement, on
the understanding that they be permitted to remain in England until after Xmas.
